Is it a SHRIMP or a PRAWN?

Is this a Shrimp or a Prawn?

Hint: The easiest way to identify, whether its a shrimp or prawn is by observing its abdominal segments. If its a shrimp the second segment on its abdomen is seen to overlap on the first and the second segments. While in the case of Prawns the second abdominal segment overlaps on only the third segment.

Take a close look and decide ;)

  3. You see those lining on the top of its back? those are the segments... the second segment is only just on top of the third segment... that's why its classified as a prawn... Found it? hmm if not I will label it later :)

  6. its easy
no wonder its a prawn, my reasons
1- Most of the time based on logic anyone who ask a question like this will not say the right thing first "if it is a shrimp the 2nd segment on its abdomen is seen to overlap..."it will be always opposite.
2-it can be seen clearly second segment on its abdomen is seen to overlap only on the third, while the second segment is not overlapping with the first, it is the first segment which overlaps with the second:P

heard also prawns are larger than shrimps. And isn't there any difference in appendages i wonder!if you have shown both it could have been very helpful. no doubt even now it is helpful:D

  7. - Vanilla: You are right, maybe I was using the wrong term here...

In prawns, the segments overlap on each other from the front as seen in the picture, without any exception.

But in the case of Shrimps, the second segment (or the second side plate) is seen to on top of the first plate and the third plate... I have put a picture of a shrimp beneath (its not very clear though)

    - 4ajja: I really was trying to give a Hint there :P

Apart from the segments, they both have different gill structures... most of the time any large shrimp is called a prawn depends on which part of the world you are in.
